What’s up people. I have super mixed feeling about it already being May. On one hand I’m super happy that the weather is getting better and that Summer is here, but on the other I’m a bit confused as to where the time went. Time marches on, especially in your first year out of college.
Another reason I’m cautious about May is my dinner situation for the month. As many of you know, the winner of the March Madness bracket challenge had the honor of choosing what food item I would eat for dinner for all 31 days of the great month of May. The winner was my friend Jay from college and the food is a home made chicken cutlet. Jay’s concern for both my wallet and general health are greatly appreciated. Last night, May 1st, was the kickoff of the month long challenge and I decided to shallow fry my freshly breaded chicken cutlet and put it on a sandwich with some pepper jack cheese, spinach, and my secret house-made aioli (mayo & hot sauce). The result was pretty delicious and I’m excited to see how talented I become at the art of making breaded chicken over the course of the month. Please LET ME KNOW of any good recipes that involve chicken cutlets or any unique ways you know of how to make them, as I’m sure I’ll run out of ideas by May 10th. Here’s my first attempt from last night:
I think I did pretty well on the first go around, but the only way from here is up!
The cold plunges are going well, and they’re getting progressively easier as the weather warms up and I get used to the waters of castle island. I do feel bad, however, for the family trying to take a memorable family photo right in my usual swimming spot yesterday. I take pride in knowing that I’ll probably be splashing around in the background of their 2024 Christmas card. Be on the lookout for that! I’ve been sending these pictures to my family group chat and their responses have gotten increasingly more supportive as the weeks go by (potentially out of pity, but a win is a win). Here I am on the white sand (dark gray) beaches of South Boston!
Also it’s worth noting that I finally have permanent front teeth in. It was a long road but my chompers are no longer at risk of flying out of my yaphole at any given moment. Vibes are high! Alright, that’s enough of the personal updates, back to your regularly scheduled programming.
The Summer of Ridiculous Promos
Last Friday while at Shannon’s Tavern my friend noticed some hilarious fine print on a promotion poster. After a quick google search and a conversation with the bartender, we decided that there is no way that this promotion has ever been used. Just take a look:
At first glance, it looks pretty normal. The rebate thing might be a little weird and I’ve never met someone who would voluntarily drink a Nutrl at a bar, but after a quick scan it just appears that you basically just get $2 off the purchase of a drink. Sounds like a good deal! But if you take a closer look at the outrageously small print at the bottom you’ll notice that the the requirement for the promo is just ridiculous.
Is that not the smallest print you’ve ever seen? Who would ever be randomly carrying an Anheuser-Busch Prepaid Mastercard? Correct me if I’m wrong, but the only pre-paid card I’ve ever seen on a (kind of) regular basis are those visa gift cards you get as a random gift. I might just have to go to the AB website and get one of these cards just so I can see the look on the bartenders face as a I proudly ask for the $2 rebate.
Here’s another one from our friends at Sullivan’s Castle Island. This little shack at the end of the boardwalk is open for like 4 months out of the year and serves up some of the most classic beach fare in the game. They also have a signature drink that will blow your socks off. Their “Raspberry Lime Rickey” drink is just spectacular. Who knows what’s in it, but it’s delicious.
This promo looks normal enough until you realize that these guys close up shop at like 5:30pm and stop taking orders far before that. Maybe I’m just salty that I can’t take advantage of this stellar promo, but I find it wild that they chose Tuesday over a more popular beach day. At least give us Fridays, Sully.
These Guys Get it: Posting Up for Hours
I’m officially declaring that the Summer of 2024 is the Summer of posting up in public parks for hours on end with no agenda. The older crowd of South Boston has already started flocking to the beach to just sit around and exist, and I’m so jealous. If chilling was an olympic sport I’m convinced that these fellas would be the American representatives in Paris this Summer. I’m also making the call right now that we need to bring slip n’ slides back. Those things rock. Just launching yourself onto the ground to slide like 20 feet to then get back up and do it again, electric factory.
Double Song of the Day Special:
I’m a sucker for the weekend. I don’t know about you, but the idea of Saturday and Sunday fire me up. On weekend mornings, in my opinion, there are only two acceptable moods. I believe that these moods are perfectly encapsulated by these two very different songs. This is what waking up on any given weekend day sounds like in my head:
Rock the Casbah by The Clash
On a Saturday with plans, this is the exactly where my head is at. It’s physically impossible to not get up and move around with this tune blaring. The moment you turn this song on a speaker a cold Pacifico spawns in your hand and you’re ready to get active.
Cigarettes and Coffee by Otis Redding
On a weekend morning with no plans, this is the ideal mood. All 4 minutes of this absolute banger are about posting up on a porch and just existing, which plays perfectly into my prerogative to post up more this Summer.
I hope this weekend brings you at least one of these vibes, if not both! We’re almost there!
You’ll be clucking by Memorial Day Andrew. Will send recipes!
Cutlet #1 looks good, only 30 more to go!
